In any crisis or disaster, women’s health needs intensify, but can be overlooked, and so we need to work to make sure that the devastating earthquake in Haiti doesn’t have a similarly devastating effect on women’s health on the island. Before the earthquake, Haiti already had the highest maternal mortality rate in the Western Hemisphere, with 607 women per 100,000 dying in childbirth. The current disaster has only compounded existing problems, and the UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund estimates that the three million people affected by the crisis include as many as 37,000 pregnant women.

COHI is dedicated to caring for the unique and critical health needs of women in crisis situations, and they need your help to make sure that women’s health needs are addressed as part of the crisis response. COHI’s first team of volunteer midwives and public health professionals is already on the ground in Haiti, identifying and responding to women’s health needs, working with local and international organizations, and laying the groundwork for a coordinated COHI response to the crisis. Another team is slated to leave in the last week of January. They are desperately seeking donations, both to ensure the safety of our volunteers and to care for the women of Haiti. Please consider supporting their work!
